When we talk about skincare, we usually focus on our faces. We all want our faces to look amazing, but what about the rest of our body?

Your body needs some TLC too just like your face.

Even though your body’s skin is tougher than your facial skin, it still deserves some love and care. So It’s essential to care for your whole body, not just certain parts.

That’s why we’ve put together some essential steps to help you give your body the attention it deserves. Keep reading and jot down any tips you might have missed to ensure that your body’s skincare routine is effective.

Why Should Your Body Have a Skin Care Routine?

Your skin is your body’s first line of defence, acting as a protective barrier against harmful bacteria and environmental factors. That’s why it’s critical to take good care of it—not just to prevent infections and diseases but also to keep it looking and feeling its best.

Additionally, achieving a healthy and attractive appearance requires daily care for your body, which should go beyond basic hygiene practices such as showering and applying lotion. Proper care involves using the right moisturiser, shaving correctly, and dressing appropriately.

So, to keep your look smooth and fresh every day, just add these to your daily routine:

1. Bathe Daily

Body Care

The first step in taking care of your body is keeping it clean and the easiest way to do this is by showering regularly. If you are mostly at home, you can shower once a day is usually enough.

However, if you go out, even if it’s just for a short walk, try to shower twice that day. This is because when you step out, your body comes into contact with a host of unseen elements like germs, dust, and dirt that can accumulate on your skin.

While your home is generally safer, especially if you keep it tidy, it’s not completely free from these elements, although the exposure is less intense compared to the outdoor environment. That’s why regular showering is important, no matter where you spend your time.

Exfoliating

To exfoliate effectively, you’ll need a few essential items: a wash towel, an exfoliating sponge, and bathing soap or shower gel. When you’re scrubbing, focus on areas where your skin tends to be rougher, like your elbows and knees.

Exfoliation is beneficial for two main reasons: to unclog pores and remove dead skin by shedding off the top layer of dead cells. Most experts suggest exfoliating 2-3 times a week but don’t overdo it. The idea is to be gentle with your skin, just like you would with exercise. (Asian Beauty Essentials: Petrullo, 2023).

However, personal experiences can differ from these general guidelines. In my case, I actually exfoliate daily using an African exfoliating sponge. Interestingly, I didn’t realise its specific purpose until I researched it. These sponges are commonplace in Nigeria, where I’m from, and I’ve used them my whole life without knowing I was going against the ‘typical recommendations’.

Surprisingly, despite this frequent exfoliation, I haven’t noticed any negative side effects. In fact, my skin is in great condition. Nevertheless, I’m not suggesting you change your routine. Whether you’ve always used this type of sponge or if you don’t exfoliate daily, it’s best to stick with what works for you. If the exfoliating sponge doesn’t cause any issues for your skin, then continue using it.

Now that we’ve covered exfoliation, let’s move on to another crucial aspect of your daily bathing routine: using body wash. While exfoliating helps remove dead skin cells, body wash is essential for cleansing and nourishing your skin daily.

Body Wash

When it comes to body wash, choosing the right product is important. While many body washes claim to be suitable for all skin types, you should choose one that is suited for your skin type, especially if you have specific skin concerns.

By using a body wash tailored to your skin, you’re not only ensuring the best care for your skin but also avoiding potential complications or negative reactions.

When washing, it’s better to use warm water instead of hot water. Warm water helps preserve your skin’s natural oils, keeping your skin healthy and hydrated.

2. Get a good moisturiser

After cleansing your skin, the next vital step in your body care routine is moisturising. This step is crucial because exfoliating, washing, and shaving can leave your skin feeling dry. Regular moisturising keeps your skin hydrated, supple, and radiant, so make it a habit to apply moisturiser each time you bathe.

When selecting a moisturiser, you’ll typically encounter two main types: lotions and creams. Lotions are lightweight moisturisers with a higher water content and a lower oil content compared to creams. They are well-suited to normal, dry, or oily skin types, as they provide hydration without a heavy or greasy feel.

Moisturise your body with a good moisturiser

On the other hand, if you have extremely dry skin, a cream may be more appropriate. Creams have a rich texture and are highly effective at retaining moisture, helping to protect your skin’s barrier.

To find the ideal moisturiser for your skin, opt for products that offer the necessary nutrients and targeted treatments to address your skin’s needs.

3. Properly Shave

Shaving is a crucial part of many people’s body care routines, best done before washing and moisturising. It’s not just about aesthetics; removing excess hair can help you feel clean, comfortable, and confident. This is more hygienic for areas like the armpits, where hair can trap sweat and cause odours.

A woman is shaving her armpit with a shaving razor.

Common shaving areas include the legs, arms, armpits, and pubic region, but shaving itself is a personal choice. You don’t need to shave every day, or even at all, if you prefer not to. For instance, I don’t shave my legs and arms, and that’s okay.

When it comes to the removal of pubic hair, everyone has their own preference. Some like to keep it minimal; others opt for a tidy trim; and some prefer a completely smooth look.

‘It’s all about what feels right for you.’

If you decide to shave your pubic area, you need to be extra careful because the skin there is sensitive. A helpful tip is to exfoliate before shaving to avoid ingrown hairs (hairs that grow inward instead of outward). If you use hair removal creams, some products may suggest applying them to dry skin, so make sure you read the instructions before application.

Now let’s look at three common hair removal methods and how to use them safely. These tips will help you get good results while protecting your skin, whether you prefer using creams, waxing, or shaving with a razor.

How to use hair removal creams:

  1. Follow the product instructions carefully, as some creams work better on dry, non-exfoliated skin.
  2. Before using the cream, do a patch test to check for skin irritation.
  3. Apply a thick layer of the cream to the areas you want to shave.
  4. Avoid applying the cream to sensitive areas, such as stretch marks, as some products caution against it.
  5. Do not leave the cream on for longer than directed to prevent chemical burns.
  6. Rinse thoroughly with cool water when the recommended time is up.

Waxing tips:

  1. Exfoliate 24 to 48 hours before waxing to prevent ingrown hairs.
  2. Do not wax over the same area repeatedly in one session.
  3. Also, avoid hot baths and lotions for 24 hours after shaving to prevent irritation.

How to Shave:

  1. Exfoliate as usual beforehand.
  2. Then use a clean, fresh, sharp razor and plenty of shaving cream/gel.
  3. Shave in the direction your hair grows.
  4. Then rinse with cool water and moisturise.

You might not need to shave weekly; once a month could be enough, depending on how fast your hair grows and what you prefer. The goal is to remove hair without irritating your skin or causing bumps.

4. Observe your body

Even though this is not exactly a bathing procedure, it’s quite useful for caring for your body. To do this, you should make it a habit to regularly observe and examine your body.

You can do this by standing in front of a mirror and noticing any changes in your body, or by feeling your skin to check for any irregularities such as bumps, lumps, scars, or any unusual reactions.

Keeping track of how your body is feeling and reacting to your skincare routine is important. It helps you notice any symptoms that could indicate health issues like cancer or skin reactions such as scabies or ringworms.

It also lets you know how your body is responding to your current skincare products. If you see positive changes, that’s great! If not, it may be time to make some adjustments to your routine.

Just to be clear, not all changes in your skin or body are cause for concern. Some differences may just be natural for your body. However, it’s critical to know when to seek medical attention, especially if the abnormality is causing pain or discomfort.

This routine is very essential and should not be taken lightly.

5. Wear clean and comfortable clothes

The clothes you wear impact how you feel each day. It’s not just about looking good; feeling good is essential. Keep your clothes clean and fresh, whether you’re at home or out.

Choose comfortable clothes that allow your skin to breathe. Fashion trends are fun, but your well-being should come first.

You don’t have to choose between style and comfort. Wear clothes that boost your confidence and fit the occasion. You can look online for style tips if needed.

Ultimately, wear what makes you feel great. Prioritise your own comfort and confidence over fitting someone else’s standards.

6. Dress for the weather

Dress appropriately for both the occasion and the weather, especially if you live somewhere with an unpredictable climate, like the United Kingdom (UK).

Weather significantly impacts your skin, whether you realise it or not.

Sunny days can expose you to harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, potentially causing sunburn (John Hopkins Medicine). Dry conditions may dehydrate your skin, while rainy days can wash away moisturiser, ironically leaving your skin flaky and dry.

By considering the weather when choosing your outfit, you can better protect your skin and maintain its health. This might mean wearing sunscreen on bright days, choosing moisture-wicking fabrics in humid conditions, or applying extra moisturiser before heading out in the rain.

7. Apply deodorant

To stay fresh and comfortable, you need more than just shaving, bathing, and moisturising—you also need a deodorant. Deodorant prevents body odour, which occurs when sweat reacts with bacteria on your skin. It works by killing bacteria and masking odours to keep you smelling fresh all day.

The different types of deodorants

When choosing a deodorant, think about your lifestyle and preferences. Here are a few options:

  • Stick deodorants: easy to apply and long-lasting.
  • Spray deodorant: quick and convenient.
  • Roll-ons: light and smooth.
  • Creams: gentle on sensitive skin.
  • Natural options: fewer synthetic ingredients

Consider your skin type, sweat level, and preferred scent. For heavy sweating, you might need an antiperspirant. If you have sensitive skin, opt for unscented or hypoallergenic products.

Finding the right deodorant may take some trial and error, so try different kinds to see what works best for you.

Eat healthy foods and fruits

Taking care of your skin involves more than just external treatments; your diet plays a huge role too. To keep your skin fresh and glowing, it’s crucial to eat healthy foods.

For example, focusing on nutritious options like beans, rice, beef, oats, vegetables, and fruits can improve your skin health and overall well-being.

On the other hand, try to avoid junk food and unhealthy oils, such as trans fats, as they can harm your skin and health.

Remember, what you put on your plate is as important as what you put on your skin. Feed your body well, and it will show on your skin.
